Ronald Tomlinson - How and Why I became a Christian

In 2008 my wife and I started attending an Alpha course which aims to explore a few issues surrounding Christianity.  From doing this, I came to accept that when I compared myself to my peers, I was only looking at the bottom end of the scale – Jesus was somewhere off the scale at the top.  At the same time I also came to realise how much it meant to my wife that I should come to know Jesus – not because it would please her, but for the difference it would make in my life.

From the Alpha course I became aware that I had to make a decision as I could no longer simply believe that Jesus was simply a “good man”, and I could certainly no longer believe that he never existed. That said, I still couldn’t quite make the step to confessing my sins, accepting Jesus died for me and accept Gods forgiveness.  I still felt I had too many questions and made the mistake of thinking that I still had to “do” something else – that this was not a gift freely given.

I had to make a decision

A few weeks after completing the Alpha course, we moved to Belgium to start new jobs.  We were prepared for things being very hard for us in our first few weeks as we tried to settle in – but things went much better than we expected. The things I had worried about didn’t materialise, and indeed I felt certain we were being guided and looked after and it was this that helped me make the final step in becoming a Christian.

What’s happened since:

Since becoming a Christian, like the first testimony I heard, I have been very much aware of God’s guiding presence in various aspects of my life.  I have seen how generous God has been to me in all that he has given me, and have come to see how selfish and sinful I can be at times.  In particular, I have come to realise that I have been entrusted with the responsibility of using the resources I have been given wisely in a way that will have eternal, rather than short lived benefit. At times, being a Christian has not been easy but I trust that through prayer and with the supporting guidance of other Christians, I will become more Christ like.

The Christian Message can change your life!

The Bible says:  If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
